Pre-Professional Division

PRB’s pre-professional division continues the work of learning ballet technique. This division consists of Preparatory, First through Fifth Years, where students continue to perfect the basic ballet positions, progression of a standard ballet barre, the French vocabulary that is used in ballet class and move into centre work away from the support of the barre. Students move through these levels as their mind and body are able to assimilate the requirements, some staying in a level 2 years or more and some moving through much more quickly. They are moved to the next level at the discretion of the Artistic Director, the School Director and all faculty. Students in PRB’s pre-professional division are eligible to audition for The Nutcracker and are included in The Summer Concert.

PRB’s Fifth Year dancers are our more advanced students and have more performing opportunities. Annually these students perform in PRB’s productions of The Nutcracker, The Spring Gala Concert, Regional Dance America’s Northeast Festival, and The Summer Concert, as well as guest performances with Virginia Regional Ballet’s Nutcracker and other collaborative productions.

Fifth Year students are selected from our pre-professional division and are usually in high school (9th – 12th grades). Fifth Year students are eligible for original choreography set on members by internationally known choreographers who come to PRB each year. These works are premiered at PRB’s Spring Gala Concert and are eligible for inclusion at Regional Dance America’s annual Northeast Festival.
